RD Sonance 15 Power Handling?

Got a RD Sonance 15" D4. Doesnt Have the flatwind coils. The website is a little vague as to what the power handling is. it says 500/1000 Watts RMS. So whats the deal? is it 500 or 1000? My brother is borrowed it for a month and is bringing it back this week in its new 3.5 cube box ported at 30hz. he says it gets hot after 15 or 20 minutes of banging it hard and sometimes he hears a noise like a pop. i'm thinking its bottoming out. but he is only running it on a jl 500/1 and he has the subsonic filter set right on the money at 30hz. so is 500 all this thing can take or is he just hearing body panels rattle and scaring me? LOL. (he hasnt paid enough attention to find out where the random noise came from but it only does it when its way loud and it isnt constant like a voice coil slapping. just a random crack.)

Not sure on the gains cuz he is in south florida right now. we talk on the phone. i didnt have time to build a box so he took it down there and is bringing it back in the new box on the 7th. but i originally set up his system and i had his tw5 13" shallow mount sounding awesome but who knows he may have f'd with the gains since then.

can take up 2 1000rms it depends on the options the sub had got, id give it a nice 750 rms and be happy. i had 2 of them on a solid audio f15d ported things banged fine. sounds like the box is complete shit, i have a man here in tampa makes amazing boxes really reasonable 1inch mdf all he uses
