rca from hu to amp

i have a jensen headunit with only 1 female connect for rca to hook up my amp for the subwoofer. On the amp their is the typical L & R connections for my rca. Do i need a Y adapter to hook up to the head unit?
No, subwoofers are mono, not stereo, so you only need to connect one side of the signal. You can use a Y-splitter if you want to for asthetics and visual appeal, but there won't be a difference in performance.

I have a mono out from my HU as well.

My amp has the option for a mono input or for multi-channel input. I found that I got more output from the amp by using the multi channel input with y-cables and didn't have to use as much gain to get rated power from the amp.

You might want to experiment and see what works best in your case.
