dont use a dmm unless the problem persists after you sand it. Sanding the ground is just automatic, you should always do that, you dont need to go buy a mm and worry about that. It is very likely your ground is not clean so that is your problem, just go buy some sand paper at home depot, or even fred meyers or walmart or something.

And while you're at it, buy a DMM from Lowe's or Home Depot...

If you do any kind of audio/electrical work, you need a good meter. It's not optional.
