Hey, im new to the forums. A little over a month ago i bought a used 2001 Volkswagen Golf from a dealer, about two weeks ago i decided to replace the stock radio and stock speakers with a pioneer headunit and infinity speakers. The install was done at circuit city and at first everything seemed fine, a few days later i started to notice a static noise on FM and i realized i could not get AM at all, i took the car back to circuit city and they found out they installed the wrong adapter, they put the correct one in and i started driving and i still heard static on the FM stations, but AM comes in fine. I took it back to them again and now they say its probably my antenna, so i bought an aftermarket amplified antenna and hooked it temperarly up to my radio, but now it seemed the noise was worse. I now know the antenna is not the problem. I have no idea what else i could do because i am at a loss at what is causing it.
Here's the exact problem: At idle there is no static, as the car accelerates i can hear the static increase in amplitude, at highway speeds it gets pretty bad. However the wierd thing is, if i have a passenger in the car with me, the static seems to be reduced. To me, it also seems that static is heavier on the passenger side of the car. The CD player works fine and i dont hear any static from the speakers, so i know those are working fine. It never did this with my stock radio and started when i got the pioneer installed. I tried replacing the headunit with a different one and it still has static. Again this only happens on FM, AM stations come in fine. The sound is a static, popping-like noise
