"hits"?

so what do you think would power that? like what do you think he/she had?

from what I understand...156 dB is really hard to get. I think in that case it's more of the install then the amount of power (although I would bet they had a not so petty supply of it). 150dB seems to be the bench mark that many strive for (many not acheiving), and even 140 is pretty loud.

remember, that the decible scale is log rithmic, so an increase in 3 dB is double the pressure. If you are setting up a system, don't worry about the pressure that you will acheive unless you are planning on competing,(it depends on too many things and really doesn't matter too much) just listen to people on these boards about subs and sufficient power, they will help you out.

well i would like to make a fairly decent place in a competition and being in the boonies of ak it doesn't seem to be that hard to do... I heard some people with 2 w3's? I think it was and they placed 4th, and the bass it was producing was actually quite depressing... so i was thinking of throwing a system together and seeing how i compete ^_^ i'd REALLY like to learn about this stuff and how it works but dang... it's so hard to self teach this stuff... i can usually pick up on stuff fairly well but there's just something about this that apparently I'm missing

what would you like to know more specifically, i can help you with what i can, and people around here will help you as well. Just stick around and listen to what people have to say, learning will come in time dont' worry.

well.... everything... lol the only this I know is how to make a box... only cause I watched a friend of mine make 2 in the same day... I've kinda done alot with home speakers and set them up and did all that but car audio seems to be a completely different ball park i kinda feel like michael jorden when he decided to quit basketball and started playing baseball instead. but ya, I'd love to compete and I think my goal is getting 1st here. do you have any suggestions on subs, amps, and designs for boxes? i'd like to just get those basics out of the way, so I atleast know whats good or not.

good subs, amps, etc. all depend on what you are willing to put in money wise. Tell us how much you want to spend and you will get many options as to what you can do. For starters though, without knowing too much about what you want, i can tell you that if you are competing then you will most likely want to have a ported box (vs sealed) as they are louder. I may also suggest that you have a switchable port on it...I say this because while competing you usually have your box tuned higher ( around 50Hz or so), but for daily driving and listening pleasure, many enjoy a lower tuning frequency (around 30Hz). I don't know if what I am saying makes sense...if not i can try to clear things up just tell me.

I kinda understand, but whats the difference from 30 to 50, is it just lower sound and not so loud?

if you tune it at 30Hz, you will get a deeper and cleaner sound due to the fact that low notes are generally clearer. The 50Hz tuning is louder just because most cars have their resonance frequency around that area...the problem with tuning higher is that the notes with the most "umph" are those at the buzzy frequencies. Daily drivers use lower tuning because low notes are most pleasing to the ears, and tuning low, brings those notes out

It's harder to achieve loud bass at lower frequencies, plain and simple.

Think of it this way:

Ever hear a pair of really loud home tweeters? Like they make you feel like your ears are going to bleed? They don't need that much power to get real loud because the higher frequencies have shorter wave lengths. Idealisticaly, the goal in SPL is to find the frequency at which your car produces a full wavelength between the sub an the mic, and tune your port to where it will peak at that frequency. Bass frequencies have huge wavelengths, so this can be very difficult to do, especially in the sub 50hZ range (the lower the frequency, the longer the wavelength. Loyd Lowery (aka the BassGod) has a special box design that gets very loud way down there, but that's a whole new thread.

I hope I haven't confused ya too much //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Trying to explain Loyd's box (I heard it's of a TL type, although Loyd neither confirms nor denies) to someone like me would be trying to get a kid to understand aeronautic engineering... it's not a new thread, it's a whole new forum. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

wow, thanks guys! I have no clue what he/she was running to get that, I was hoping someone could dtell me XD do any of you know of a good 1600 watt amp that pretty good? price really isn't an issue, this is just something I'm thinking of doing and will probly save up for, but 2 xxx 18"subs.... I can get the subs no prob. but amps seem to be pretty pricy >.

two 18" triple x's are going to be WAYYY more than the amp to drive them.....

I'm quite pleased with my Cadence A7 (i swapped my old JBL 1200.1 for it, straight even), and you can usually find those on ebay for >$300. It's not quite 1600w on my electrical system, but (and i can't stress this enough) there's not an amplifier out there that is efficient enough to put out that kind of power on a stock electrical system. If you want crazy power like that, you're going to have to spend more on the power supply than the amp itself.
