Quick question

i need some opinions. i have a 12 in. kicker compvr. are these speakers for more sq applications? i want to port it for a little more spl. but would it feel more at home in a sealed box? thanks for opinions because kicker sure isn't any help.

porting it will be fine...

i had a 15" in a 2 cube box (way too small) and it got decently loud.

Those drivers are far some SQ based... They shine 100% better in ported enclosures. If you want to maintain SQ then tune low, and your output will be much better than sealed.

why does kicker recommend tuning to ~40hz that seems really high.

loudness. most people who buy kicker are into bein as loud as possible. port a little bit lower 32-34hz and you will be fine

so will i be ok at 38hz if i don't have a subsonic filter? isn't most music from the 30-50 hertz range? i want to get loud but i do not want to tune to high and bottom out my sub.

youre gonna need an SSf to be safe. 38 is still kinda high for music. but its up to you.
