when determining how much port area and length you need do you use

a: the gross volume of the box

b: the net volume you want the box to be

How much port area: C, none of the above.

Length with a given port area: B, net volume.

so if i want my box an even 5 cubes, then i am going to have 80 square inches of port (considering im using 16 square inches per cubic foot) and get my length for tuning from there?

Yes, then length of your port is dependant upon the port area.

Once you have the port area you use the NET vol of the box to figure out the length.
