This might be a funny story or not. Recently a friend of mine, luckily not me, bought a amp, two 12's, and a box, in a package from pep boys for 160. It was deceiving deal. I myself was fooled until after he called and told me. It advertised 1000watts of power and he thought it was for a 1000watt amp. lol apparently it was a 400watt amp and subs that could put out 1000W. So I am wondering, is it worth it for me to get it myself or is a 400W amp much too underpowered for subs that can put out 1000Watts?

I bet that "400 watts" isn't even RMS. Buying car audio from Pep Boys is like buying Thanksgiving dinner at Wendy's.

A) Subwoofers do not "put out" any amount of wattage. Subwoofers output amplified subbass frequencies sourced from an amplifier. Subwoofers are capable of accepting X amount of wattage with the specific level of wattage being dependent on the sub in question's build

B) If it is the All-n-1 Visonik package like they have at my local Pep Boys then the amp included in the package deal is sufficient for the subs it is supplied with. The amp is rated for around the same amount of RMS output as the subs together are rated for RMS input.

Is it worth $160? I wouldn't know. I've never listened to any of them as nobody I know owns any. Only your friend can be the judge of whether or not it was money well spent.
