Question with a four chanel AMP

Hello there, right at the moment i have a pair of 10" subs running from a SPLX amp (soon to change).

The door speakers are wired into the head unit, but i want to upgrade to some different door speakers and run them from an amplifier.

I was thinking if i got a 4 channel amp i could run the two fronts and 2 6x9s of the 4 channel amp and have a pre-out into the SPLX amp to run the sub (crossover built in)

I take it that would work? Assuming i got an amp with a pre-out.

Next question:

On a lot of 4 channel amps i see they have 2 inputs (front and back) so would i need a Y splitter?

It depends on how many pre outs are on the back of your headunit. How many pre outs does yours have? And I dont think you can run rcas from the 4ch to the mono for the sub signal. I've never seen anyone do that before.

Most likely you would need the Y-adapter if your HU only has 1 pre-amp out , the amp you buy will say for sure in the manual. And yes, if the amp has a pre-out you can use it for your sub amp, you'll just have to use the sub amp's LPF. Yes you are correct.

Haha thanks for the visual flowchart. Most 4 channel amps have the option of duplicating the signal for channel 1/2 and 3/4 for people with just one set of RCA outputs from their headunit.
