question setting gains for sub

complete noob at this but mnah...i was setting my gains earlier with a dmm and i and the hu volume around 3/4 and a 60hz test tone playing. as i turned the gain up i got hardly any voltage increase. couldnt figure out why for a bit. i decided trying to turn the sub volume on the hu up and the voltage increased to where it should be. is it hurting anything if i have the sub volume on the hu at around 13/15? it sounded nice but i just wanna make sure im not hurting anything.

put sub volume at the max it goes then reset gain, that way you got a good accurate signal for the amp to amplify then send to your sub/s.
