question regarding video converting

well, you live in the us, so if you want to watch it on your tv, then make it 720 x 486 @ 29.97hz

if it's for your computer, that's gonna be a small video, so go larger....... or make it the same as the original if it's not bigger than that already

and most codecs have built in deinterlacers, but if you're using one that doesn't, encrypt @ 30hz, since your monitor's resolution is most likely 60hz

also forgot to mention if it's going to be authored to a vcd, dvd, svcd, kvcd, or other format, it needs to fit into a strict resolution/refresh rate/compression/codec book standard, so use an encoding program that has presets for your inteded use.......

when converting a file to a diff video format whats the best sample rate higher or lower?
10

15

20

23.976

24

25

29.97

30

those are the options i have for that. any suggestions?
those are frame rates...FPS is frames per second

30 and 29.97 are NTSC non-drop and drop frame respectively. If your content was shot in the US, those are the frame rates and are percieved to be the highest quality due to more frames per second. 25 is PAL(euro). 24 is film speed and some new HD equipment, with 23.976 being drop-frame of that. The others are lower-end for web and small file size. talking heads on the web(not much video changing) can get away with less frames.

Broadcast analog video is old school 640x480, digital is 720x486. both can be either 30 or 29.97

ok thats what i was looking for. wasnt sure if those were frame rates or what. the content im using was shot from a video camera. what would you suggest then? and what video codec would you recomend? wmv or avi?

what's the final media gonna be? DVD, file, video CD, etc.

The pinnacle cards some of the guys use around here have their own codec..pinnacle dv25 i think is what they encode using. AVI is typically bigger than wmv I believe. it'll depend on the final media though.

still don't know what you're trying to do, but if it's for your computer, i'd go with an mpeg-4 based codec in an avi carrier

xvid, divx, nero digital are all great, and i believe the differences between them are preferance over anything, plus the versions change so fast that it's impossible to say which is best

well what im trying to do is convert the file to a format i can burn to dvd and watch on my tv. I'm hoping to get better quality out of the video if possible. my problem i've had thus far is the quality is medium at best.

sorry to dig up an old post, but for future reference, if you use a program like nero premium or roxio, it will automatically reauthor your video files to put them onto dvd.

Saves all of this confusion if anyone has the same question in the future, hopefully they'll search and find this thread.

old post? t his is only like a week old.

as for what type of camcorder i wouldnt know. its something i d/led thing is im not burning them so i dont need them in dvd format, i really just want a video i could burn them if i wanted to, but mostly to view on my monitor at good quality.
