Question (inverted sub)

This probably has been asked 1000 times but i didnt find what i needed when i searched.

i have 2 12" subs in a sealed box and each sub has it's own chamber. a buddy of mine inverted both subs the other day when we were messing around and he reversed the wires (so red goes on black)

he reversed the wires on both subs

i just notice he reversed the wires today. it sounds really good too.

are the wires suppost to be reversed.

yes.

when you invert subs you'll want to reverse the polarity.

Not always, considering your subs are in the trunk, a 180 phase shift (reverse polarity) often sounds better. AKA when you invert subs, try it both ways and see which one sounds better.

I have an inverted sub and I've never heard of this before...

What do you mean reverse the wiring???

I only have one sub btw

swaps the output - becomes + and vice versa

You can do this from most good headunits to instantly hear the difference..

somebody said if i turn my sub box on end so the sub magnets are facing the roof i'll get way more bass.

what are you guys thoughts on that

i would just go do it but my box is mounted so yeah...

also a guy from school payed me $20 to wire up his amp kit for him in a blazer so maybe i have a future in this business haha

its not necessary to switch the phase on the subs...............

however....

if you invert 1 of the subs in a box that shares the same airspace----it is impairative that you reverse the phase on one sub or the other.

To further simplify, it basically will make the sub go 'in' instead of 'out' at any given moment. Of course, for a sub, it goes 'in and out' anywhere between 20-80 times per second (20-80hz) so you wont be able to physically see a change without applying a VERY low frequency (1-3hz). The reasoning behind it is that all the soundwaves from every speaker in your car interact. This becomes MOST crucial in your crossover areas (this is where multiple drivers are playing the SAME frequencies with authority) If these frequencies from different drivers are 180degrees out of phase, they will cancel eachother out, known as 'cancellation'. Since you cant judge when each soundwave from each speaker will reach you (especially with your subs all the way in the trunk), sometimes you have this cancelation even with all your speakers electrically 'in phase', this is where you might want to try to reverse the phase on your subs to see if it makes a difference.
