I'm currently a Mechanical Engineering major, but I'm probably changing my major next semester to Mechanical/Industrial Engineering with a concentration in acoustics. I'm mostly just curious about what dictates a subwoofer's performance; for example, why does more power typically mean louder output? What makes a subwoofer's design lend itself to optimum performance in sealed or ported enclosures.

Cars are loud environments. Have you tried the speaker in the car in a garage plugged into an outlet? Start isolating variables.
