Question about ipod adapter

can the ipod adapter work for a factory car? or do you have to have an aftermarket head unit for it to work?

You have 3 choices that I know of with 3 different sound qualities.

1. Ipod adapter that integrates with your HU. Usually plugs into the HU Changer port. This allows the HU full control of the Ipod and the Ipod Folder and other information to be displayed on your HU. Your HU must support this and most factory systems do not. Although some newer cars do have built in Ipod adapters.

2. If you car system supports an Aux input which many do you can plug a cable from your Ipod headphone jack to your Hu and select the Aux. This way makes you choose the songs using your ipod and not the HU. Good quality but not usually as good as option #1.

3. You can buy an Ipod adapter that plugs into your Ipod and sends the Ipod music out as an FM frequency signal. You would then tune your HU to the correct FM channel to listen to your Ipod. Not very good quality IMO.

ah ok. well i want good quality from my ipod. i think i might be getting the full blown package, new front and back speakers, and new headunit

What kinda car is it? There are Ipod adapters made for cars that go back well into the 90's

I have a clarion headunit and am debating between using the clarion ea1251b ipod control unit or just using my auxillary input and the ipod headphone jack. the reviews i read on the clarion control unit dont seem to be good. in fact, it doesnt look like it fully controls the ipod. does this depend on the hu? its definately cheaper to go the aux. route, but will it sound alright?

dont forget the other two choices.

4. that tape thing that gives you bad quality.

5. something that hooks between your head unit and the antenna from the car. i assume this will give you radio like quality.

i use the ipod adapter off my pioneer deck where i can control it through the deck. the only thing i regret is not getting a flash ipod. my video goes into some type of protect mode where i need to reset it when ever i play tones.

i am probably going to go with option #2. However, I only see 6-7ft cables. Are there any that are 1-2 ft?

This is the cable I use when I want to see the Video on the Ipod and have the sound go to my AUX on my HU.

Cheap Ipods are hard to come by. There like fair traded. No one can get them cheaper. I looked for weeks to get the best deal on a new 30 Gig 5G video Ipod and finally bought it from Apple.com for $250. Even used ones are expensive.
