Question about HUs

I'm really unclear on how much of a difference the headunit makes, would upgrading my head unit effect how low or loud my system could get?

sorry to be daft, it's just I still haven't gotten everything figured out yet.

Aftermarket typically has more power, not much but more than stock but a little, and provides better control over the sound.

well, wasn't really sure, I know plenty of friends who think their car is the **** because they put a shiny stero in :/
