Question about Alpine CDA 7998

I bought one of these from Ebay and it's a really cool unit. I"m just curious what the metal box hanging from a green wire on the back is. The Wiring guide says it's some kind of outboard DC DC, but i don't know what that is.

It is a DC to DC converter that optimizes the power fed into the unit.

I've got a 7998, also, and wanted to ask another question about it.

When I start my car, is there any way to stop the deck from automatically folding out like it does, or does it have to do this everytime, regardless?

For instance, sometimes if I just need to run up to the store for something quick, I'd like for the unit to just stay inside the dash, and not fold out while I make a quick run up to the store, etc. I'm basically just wanting to do this to extend the life of the motorized mechanism in the unit by it not being used every single time I start my car.

there is a manual way to get the head unit to go back in. but as far as a setting to where it doesnt' automatically come out, i dont' think there is one.

Turn the power off on the unit before shutting off the car, when it retracts the next time you get in the car it should stay inside. However, it may open but not power up.

Check the user manual, perhaps once the unit is initialized the first time it will open even though powered off, there must be a way to do it.

press and hold the eject for 3 sec, it will close all the way down and wont open till u press the open button, i just got one too and cant figure out how to run it in 2 way mode? is there a switch?

The 2-Way/3-Way switch in on the right hand side of the unit if facing you from the front.
