pros and cons of going ported

yeah where did u hear that, i heard that sealed boxes can take way more power than ported boxes.
It depends. Playing right at (and only at) a ported enclosure's tuning freq will result in a much higher power handling than in sealed enclosures. This is what SPL competitors do, and how they can push 10,000+ watts to their subs. But under normal circumstances, playing music, a small sealed enclosure generally has the most power handling.

i've gone to high vol. with my sub and it never bottomed out. wtf are u talkin about dude
He's talking about a higher volume of airspace inside the enclosure. While its true the larger the sealed enclosure gets, the less power handling the driver will take. But that's the only thing in his post that's even remotely correct. You dont need a high excursion sub to run sealed. I mean after all, what did people do before these high excursion super subs?

oh yeah EDIT, u mean SMALL SEALED. n i ment Larg sealed, EVEN RECOMMENED

my bad!! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

audioholic, i tried that //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

sorry i just didnt specify what i ment

Mechanical power handling, sure...but the reason that they can only do that for short "burps" is because at tuning, cone excursion is at minimum, so the sub is barely moving and almost no air is being passed over the voice coils. Thermal buildup is swift and merciless //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

yeah, i had a Pioneer sub that was in a 2.0 cu ft box and i gave the sub 150 rms and it was loud! i then gave the sub 400 rms and it blew cuz of being in a bigger box, i see what u mean now.

Im aware of this. The discussion was about which enclosure had the most power handling, not the thermal limitations of the drivers used. When running only at tunning, ported will yield the most power handling (regardless of driver thermal limits). When playing music, generally small sealed handles the most power, but of course is least efficient.

Im aware of this.
I figured that, my response was more in the sense of being educational to all the people out there that might have not - after all, this is what technical discussions are usually about, or at least what they should be about //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I'd still argue that an optimal ported enclosure will offer better power handling for music than an optimal sealed enclosure ...
Small sealed enclosures sound ugly in many cases ...
That would depend on tuning, music material used, etc. Im speaking in general terms when I say small sealed usually is highest power handing (for music).

Im not commenting on the sound of a small sealed box, just its power handling characterisitcs. But, there have been some pretty good sounding subs made for small sealed boxes, IDQ's and the original solobarics come to mind.

ur sub wont like the excursion.unless u have a HIGH EXcursion SUB. sealed will destroy ur subwoofer especially if u went to high vol. sub will easilly bottom out
Small sealed box or large, I don't care. It will still sound better than a ported box. I think there's ahigher chance of the sub bottoming out on ported, rather than sealed, no matter small or large.

High excursion, low excursion, what's the difference? If you play a high excursion sub soft, then it'll move only slightly. Then what? It won't like it? It's gonna sue me?? :p

In the case of SQ, you don't need 29mm or whatever xmax of the sub. 8mm is more than enough.

I'm sticking with what I said, I prefer sealed than ported. (not into SPL anymore)

Too many false generalities in that to even address.
