Properly sizing amps and speakers...RMS questions.

total newb to the car audio scene. I once put a 10" speaker in a ported box with a small amp back in 1994, but other than that, I have been dealing with factory stereo's and FM.

Trying to design the perfect system for my tastes, but there is a concept that I don't fully get yet. I understand what RMS is, but how do you properly size it up with speakers? Is there an over/under % you should stay inbetween?

for example, I want the Alpine PDX-5.

4 x 75w RMS & 1 x 300w RMS

For the front speakers, I'm thinking PG RSD65cs, which are rated @ 5w rms min/120w peak

For the rear fill, PG RSD690, which are rated for 5w rms min/165wrms peak

I assume the 4 x 75watts RMS will work fine here.

But now I move to the Sub. I want a JL Audio 12w6v2. It's rated @ 400w rms, & 800W peak

If the 300w rms of the amp not going to be good enough to power the single JL @ 400w rms?

Obviously, I'm not looking for a high end SPL system, just a nice step up from factory for my daily driver (2007 Camry SE V6) which I average about 40,000 miles a year in.

Can anybody clarify this for me? Should I put more power to the SUB, or should I go down a notch and get a 12W3v3?

thanks

Charles
