I got a couple of subs that need about 30-40 hours of break-in according to the manufacturer. I had planned to set them on a desk in my office over the weekend without any type of enclosure and let them play a test tone until they are broken in. The subs are 600 watt rms subs but I actually have an amp that I dj with that I can use that puts out 500 per channel.

Is it safe to let them play without an enclosure?

How loud should I let them play?

and What test tone should I use?

Thanks.

what subs are they? and no subs need an actual break in time. if you put them in your car and let them take their rms power, you will not hurt them. nothing will break just because your new. and i wouldnt give them 500 rms free air. they have no control when they are not in enlcosures so less power will still get them moving. you have a better chance of hurting them by playing them free air rather than being played in a box, so to say.

They are morel subs. I will just install them like normal after I build the enclosure and take it easy on them for awhile. I have heard that they sound like chit until they are truely broken in, then they sound much much better.

I was afraid without an enclosure around that I may in fact damage them so the points you make, do make alot of sense.

Wall socket.....

I have broken in a few subs by letting them sit on my floor. I put a battery charger on one of my old POS amps. Hooked it up to my cd player and threw my Toxic Bass CD in and let it loops through a 20hz test tone. Don't set it on something where it can fall off, because it will. I think I was cranking maybe 150 watts rms to it? Broke it in fine. This was back in the day, probably 10 years ago, on a Kicker L7, which had extremely rough surrounds/still do.
