Proper way to bass boost songs?

so i downloaded audacity and i have been looking up how to videos to bass boost songs without distortion. i have boosted 3 songs and they sound good in my head phones but when i listen to it in my car and turn it up its sounds distorted as hell and i dont even have a system in that car.

Gotta pay attention to where your db levels are - as you approach 0 db attenuation, your hitting the maximum recordable volume. If you're boosting beyond 0 db, it's just gonna be distortion.

That sounds like a really well thought out and financially responsible idea.

are you separating your tracks. make a high pass side and a low pass side. if i dont do this it distorts like a mother trucker. slow your track to your hitting the peak db your after if thats what your after. the hit CTRL C and the click below your track and hit CTRL P. put the top track with a high pass filter of 80 or 100hz and the bottom track with a low pass of what ever your high pass is. bass boost the bottom track a bit and amplify the top track. then export it. it should sound better.

Many good songs don't have much bass (listen to some of Metallica's early albums, or Red Hot Chili Peppers).

Sub-45hz is pretty non-existent on their recordings. The purpose of boosting tracks is to introduce some low-end into songs that otherwise don't get much output on your subwoofer(s).

An Audiocontrol Epicenter (and a few other processors out there) can do this in real-time, and are probably the better route to go though - especially if you don't have a good handle on what your doing with the source material.

boosting signal is boosting the chances of clipping your system.
