Project 626

Nice father and son project. Looking forward to hear what he thinks when it's all done...
Indeed, I wish my dad was as enthusiastic about car audio as I am. He ****ing hates subs and any loud, low end bass. He did agree that with the subs turned down a bit, they make rock, and any other music sound more "full", but as far as roof flexing rap goes... he's not thrilled. Oh well what can you do //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

That sounds like my wife. Likes loud music but hates loud bass.

Listening to this system makes me smile and laugh. I already want more power //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I know im the odd man out in my age group. I dont know many people my age that have the same musical tastes. I love rap and Hip Hop but listen to more older stuff, also rock, reggae, electronic, new wave etc. Almost everything but country. A lot of the new jams just seem like programmed BS with no soul. Just a hook and a bass track. The past few years I feel lucky to find a half a dozen songs I would like to add to my collection.

Its ALIVE!
Dont have the gains set properly yet but even with them set conservatively it Fcuking pounds.

We havent been to any shows yet so I have never heard a seriously loud system. This is without a doubt the loudest system I have ever heard though. Puts my truck and its wimpy 10" and 600 watts to shame.

Now I cant wait till we can get another sub with D4 or D1 coils to match the amp or an amp with 2500 watts at 1 ohm that matches the sub so we can really get this thing shaking. Im still tempted to just wire the sub to 1 ohm and let it rip, cross my fingers and hope we dont smoke the amp.
Hmmm, kind of a touchy decision there.. Being that it's an older car, the electrical system probably isn't the strongest. Now if you had an upgraded alt, battery in the back AND the big 3 upgrade and could give the amp a constant supply around 14+ volts, then you'd be safe to push it @ 1 ohm. To be honest though, with the impedance rise you're getting, it would probably bring a 1 ohm load decently close to a 2ohm final load. Definitely have a volt meter at hand though, and if the voltage starts to take a drop, shut'er down. That's up to you though, I definitely don't want to give you any advice to mess up your amp.

I think its best to wait fot the electrical upgrades. I have the big 3 done with a 1/0 ga ground wire ran to a distro in the trunk but the alt is stock and probably original and the battery thats in it looks like its 4-5 years old. We were bumpin it last night and had dimming issues. Not really bad but I did notice it. Probably best for him to start saving for another alt and a fresh battery at least. With the ground run to the trunk already, adding another battery should be pretty easy.

I have looked for a high output alt for this car but didnt have much luck. 90 amps was the highest output I could find. Where is a good place that I could check out that might be able to hook us up with some more power?

Its also still raining here so the vids and picts are still on hold. As soon as it clears up I will get them posted.

Mechman has good prices on alts. Email them though and they'll give ya a better deal

Heres picts of the finished doors and the trunk. Tried taking a video but the rechargeable batteries went dead //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif Try again later.

The trunk.

Heres the dash mounted tweeters and the doors. The drivers side door has the cloth taken off. Had a bunch of cigarette burns on it. We are recovering it later on.

The Mazda 626 has one of the the most bland looking interiors I've ever seen. The new head unit and those beautiful door pods really make the interior look as good as it sounds I'm sure. Almost makes me want to go try some pods for the 66' mustang. I can't put myself to try to make pods for a classic car though, especially not my first fiberglass try. I feel like I've watched it be done enough times, still haunts me though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif I can't stand the single front mono speaker mounted in the dash though. That's right, MONO. Doesn't even have stereo sound output, just one ghey speaker. Oh well, should I decide to, that would make a cool build log, probably the first 60's muscle car on here to get glass kicks //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Your right about the car, It drives well, actually very comfortable and has a smooth ride. It is a generic looking body and interior. The oscillating front a/c / heating vents crack me up. Next thing is a little body work and some paint. This Mazda has the problem with the f-ed up paint and clearcoat. Looks like someone poured paint remover all over it.

Im also going to mess around with an amp rack/mount for the alpine and tuck it away in the spot on the right side where its sitting. I just have it mounted there because it was easy and we were impatient.

Putting them in the kicks is probably the only place you could get away with pods in an old Mustang. Cutting into the doors just wouldnt be right in a classic like that. Kick pods can always be removed. Glassin is pretty simple but can be a bit pricey when you first start. Your probably looking at at least 100 dollars for the resin, matt, body filler, primer, spot putty and paint. If you try it just stay away from the fleece and get something like I used on these, I wrote about what I used somewhere in this build. Fleece takes a lot of resin to soak thru, 3-4 times as much as what I used. You could even do your buildup on the inside of the pods and make finishing the outside much easier. I had to glass the outside because of using the original siht holders that were on the doors. No way to glass inside the pods.

Great job! very impressive. I had a '93 mazda 626 in the same color and I put in an alpine deck, so those photos bring back a lot of memories. I had forgotten about the 'swing' feature on the a/c.

Looks good to me. I would consider relocating that amp though. If the box flexes, its going to cause the amp to flex with it and can cause the amp to break or rattle something loose.
