Project 626

Looks like a very nice build, but I still would not have chosen that wood regardless of budget. I think it'll be fine, but I would resin and fiberglass the inside of that box heavily.
Fiberglass not necessary, that wood is probably stronger than mdf and you can tell he is doing nice joints and gluing properly. A bead of silicon around the interior edges never hurt anybody to ensure an air seal though

Good to here about the electric. I have the cables for 2 runs from front to back so Im just going to run it. Not adding the second battery and all the extra distribution will save a lot of time and money. We were going to replace his battery anyway so I will probably fork out for the Optima.

My boys just lucky, his dad is an electronics junky and loves to build stuff.

About the OSB, this isnt just some crappy cheap stuff. Its seriously hard as s**t , solid as a rock. Three sides are double walled too. I would have done the top and bottom but there is no room. I have built a few boxes before with 1"MDF and double 3/4" MDF so I know how dense these materials are in comparison. The only glassing I'm going to do is on the edges and seams on the outside after I roundover the edges. Just to seal up the cut edges and make it easier to finish for paint.

I going hook it up to my QSC 1450 amp in the shop and give it a test ride for a while before I take it home.

This is the sub I have pounding away all day in the shop. TC9 12", double walled 3/4" MDF and a 4" PVC port. Flared the inside and outside with a Corian roundover bit I use for easing the edges of sink bowls. A little hard to see in the pict. Its sprayed with the same hammer finishd paint I'm going to use on his box, just a different color.

And thanks for the props on the woodworking.

Has nothing to do with strength. That wood is not as heavy as MDF, therefore it has less inertia. It will vibrate more.

I work with the wood he is using everyday on my jobsite, its dense as hell, it is more than adequate for this install.

Hell I didnt even noticed the double wall on the back nor the brace, this box will be solid for a singel sub.

Tc9 in the shop??? NICE

Had a good day today. Loooooong lunch and some decent progress.

Glued, stapled and screwed the port in and also added the final bracing. Then glued, stapled and screwed the face on. Sanded the edged down even with the handy belt sander. Used a flush trim bit on the port opening and finally eased all the edges and the port opening with a 3/8" round over bit.

I also started glassing up the edges to seal up the endgrain of the plywood and particle board. Next is the body filler and sanding and more sanding. Hope to have it ready to prime by Thursday and maybe get the first coat of paint on it Friday or Saturday.

Props thus far.

Kid is lucky to have a cool father. My dad is a car junkie, so I lucked out in that department, just not much into the audios though. Oh well, I still love my dad.......tear! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Im pretty lucky too. He's 18, has managed to stay out of trouble and doesn't get involved with all the *****es drama.

Its funny, I'm bugging him more about getting his system rolling. I just wish we could get some clear warm weather around here so we can get started on the car. Although I wouldnt mind listening to this beast in the shop for a few weeks before it finds its way into the trunk.

Getting closer. Have it all primed up and ready to sand. Need to hit a few spots with some spot filler before I paint it though. I wont be back in the shop until Tuesday to sand it and start on the finish paint. Touch the port up first, mask that off then paint the rest. Will probably wet sand that and finish it off with clear.

Here's pictures of it getting prepped and then finished priming.

Latex primer sucks BTW. I used automotive 2 part catalyzed primer on my last box and that stuff was excellent. Dried fast and hard and sanded easy. This primer will need the next 4 days to dry out and harden up. Will paint it with rattle cans but clear coat it with a 2 part system.
