Profile Amp question....

I've owned several profiles - a couple of SX-series California amps, several CA-series California amps and a couple of Clarus units. They're really tought to beat for the $$$. Reliable, cheap, and excepting the questionable cosmetics on the Clarus amps they even look pretty decent. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I keep hearing about how they're a "entry" level amp. I'm just wondering what the difference is between a Profile and a higher end amp? Do they sound different? I mean, the profiles supposedly put out rated power. Do the high end amps put out MORE than rated power? Do they somehow SOUND better?

Well i know many more expensive amps are underrated, but to me that dosent matter.

if i want 600watts, and i get 600 watts, im happy. why pay more for a more expensive amp if you can get what you want in a cheaper one?

Cleanliness of power, additional features like balanced inputs, expandable ports for adding an eq or such. These are the things gained with a higher end amp. I just saw on Xtant's website, they have the same amp I am running for $200 refurbished. That is a rediculous deal on a very nice high-end amp (3 channel) check it at:http://www.xtant.com/direct/details.cfm?PN=403AR Nice to get an $800 amp for $200, and it is clean as hell.

well i may end up running a 3 channel setup, , so ill look into that.

(EDIT: now that i look at it its just a 2, is that a typo on your part?)

are the more expensive amps actually 'cleaner'? i know they may have more options, but THD will show any distortion wont it? (stupid question, i know)

Based on what I've read on this forum and others, a cleaner sound from higher end amps seems to be an issue of ongoing debate.

BTW Steve Lew has told me - AP and HA amplifiers basically have the same circuit inside. AP costs more because of better cosmetic appearance.

No, it's not a typo, they just didn't list the wattage for the 3rd channel (sub) I have a 403a in my car right now. It does about 250w into 2ohms on the sub, and rocks components w/ the rated 50w @ 4ohms. I don't know why they did that, but it is an awesome amp.
