Is there any downside to "underpowering" these by running them off the headunit's power? I mean aside from audio quality / loudness. Are speaker drivers like electric motors where underpowering them could actually cause them to overheat?

no harm from underpowering them, but they will be a waste of money unless you amp them

i am aware they will sound even better with some more wattage thrown their way (might pick up a JL 300/2 for them, especially if the HU doesn't seem good for powering them) but i am hoping i can at least get by with them for a while on the HU.

Ummm, sorry.BUt you're SERIOUSLY wasting your time trying to run a set of pro's off of headunit power.Which will likely be 10-12 watts rms per side.

Please keep in mind, these speakers like/need 200-400 watts rms PER SIDE to really come alive.Otherwise you might as well just settle with a coaxial you like the sound of.

Yep...namely destroying them //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif Too little power has never killed any speaker, but distortion and user neglegence does all the time. You could run them off 12 watts of clean/unclipped power, but then you probably wouldn't enjoy low volume listening now would you.

to me they are very nice with just one side hooked up, good midbass so far, need the other hooked up, and can break them in a little
