I've heard actually getting it done doesn't hurt that bad. It's the healing that's a *****.

Plus you need to get jewelry large enough so the ****er doesn't migrate out on its own (the "cheese slicer effect"). 8-10ga bars or CBR's seems to be normal from what I hear.

If you pierce something that undergoes a lot of rubbing or getting bumped throughout the course of the day - navels, nipples, PA's, and hoods come to mind - it's a good idea to pierce with a large enough gauge to stop the ring from literally slicing through the skin slowly, leaving a nasty scar. That's why most piercers won't use anything smaller than 14ga for a navel, or 12ga for nipples...smaller gauges simply can't stand up to the abuse during healing. PA's undergo a lot of stress during healing, so you'd want a large gauge on there initially.

Ask them...most good shops should have numbing cream on hand - I think you can actually order some from BME if they don't have it there.
