Prefabricated Ported Boxes any good?

I am planning on getting a 12" 800w Kicker CVR and I am trying to choose the best box for it. This isn't another one of those "ported vs sealed" threads though. I will be placing the box in my trunk. I understand ported is louder, has deeper bass, potentially is more distorted, etc. and that sealed provides tighter, clearer bass, but not as loud. I would like my bass to be as deep as possible so I would really prefer a ported, however I do not have the option to build/tune a custom ported box. I was wondering if prefabricated ported boxes any good, such as on Ebay. Are they tuned correctly or should I just stick with a sealed box? I also read that for ported boxes to actually make a big difference, it must be a lot larger than the normal sealed box. Is this true? Basically what I am asking is it worth it to get a prefabricated ported box when in fact it will sound the same/worse as a prefabricated sealed?

with that sub, you could try to get a box that is tuned lower like... 32-34hz but other than that, id say build it yourself.

Have someone here build one for you, will sound MUCH better and the extra couple $$$ will be well worth it to have it done right, prefabs **** for the most part.

think of a prefab like this...

If your eyes were bad, you wouldnt go out and just buy any pair of glasses with any prescription lenses. You would buy the ones made for YOUR eyes. Glasses made for me would likely be crap for you.

Prefab boxes are made for any sub that will fit in the box. every speaker has characteristics that it needs from a box to perform its best. If you dont have the tools/know-how to do it yourself, find someone on here local to you and have them build it. Most people on here consider this stuff to be a hobby, so I cant imagine it being hard to find someone close and willing to lend a hand.

Also, for how a prefab performs, they are WAY too much money. Ive seen simple sealed boxes at places like bestbuy go for like $50-80. Youll need about $20 worth of MDF and maybe another $5-10 on screws, terminals, glue, etc. For what it costs to build it, might as well just try it out yourself. Even if it sounds like crap, youll still come out ahead having someone build you another one.

Why can you not build one yourself? It would be cheaper than buying a prefab.
