Pre-amps

I'm currently running a Rockford fosgate Symmetry and using it as a pre-amp. Its giving me some troubles (partially I dont I know how to set it up correctly) and I'm thinking of replacing it.

Anyone recommond some good crossovers/preamps? I love how the preamp has eliminated all noise from the stereo, and given some added midbass, but I can't seem to make it get loud anymore. It did in the start, but now it doesn't and the meters on the front of it don't work unless I mess with the electrical (when they do work its much louder).

What does everyone think about pre-amps in general? Better ways to go? I know that the receiver acts as a pre-amp as well, but my dvd player doesn't have as many features as I would like.
