Ppi

So .... are you re-posting in a different part of the forum or do you want to keep it here, post it again, and let me answer your PPI/6x9/bridged channels to power sub questions ... ?

I actually tried to delete it, but couldn't figure out how. What I need is for someone to direct me to a quick tutorial on amps (is there one on this site?).

Here's what I need to know:

1) What is the mathmatical formula for determing how much power you get from a bridged channel? The PPI is 85x4 @ 4 ohms, what will I get out of 3 channels: 85x2 @ 4, and ? x1 @ ?

2) I need to learn about impedance and wiring (i.e. parallel, sequence..). I know that power received and impedance are inversely proportional, I assume that to mean that any 4 ohm measure of RMS is a quarter of the actual output - if the device it was run to offered no resistance. So is there any way to wire a sub to the bridged channel at 2 ohms and double its power?

Clearly I have alot to learn, any help would be appreciated, or direction to any place I can learn. Thanks

If you want to answer the question about the 6x9s, I'd appreciate it, I took it down b/c it seemed an uniformed question to me.

My question was, if I get a 4 channel to run comps and 6x9s then decide to get a sub and use its rears for the sub and run the 6x9s off the head - will the 6x9s even be worthwhile as fill at that point, or will the sub make them underpowered and redundant

I would leave your components up front powered by two channels of the four channel amplifier, and bridge the remaining two channels to power a/the sub(s).

I think you will find that your 6x9's will either distort easily running off of the head unit ... or decide that they are throwing off your imaging and you'll just want to leave them out. You may find that you like it better with no rear fill. I would run the 6x9's off of the head unit, and them remove them alltogether and see which you like better and go from there. My guess is you'll remove them completely.

Which model PPI were you looking at exactly ? PCX480 perhaps ?

- Steve

Yes, the PCX480 was what I was looking at - I said 4x85, I meant 4x80, I was also looking at the US Acoustics 4085 . Any thoughts on either amp, I've heard good things about both, but assume the PPI is the better amp by a bit.

I don't know much about US acoustics but I know a lot about PPI. When PPI sold out thats when they started calling all their models PCX. When they went to PCX, they started building them with 5% components instead of 1 % which they used to use. It doesn't mean they don't sound sweet, but they just aren't very reliable anymore. If you want to power mids and highs I would highly recommend Eclipse brand amps. They're very clean and very crisp, and not too expensive( competition quality). P.S. Unless you can run the 6x9's with an amp, don't run them off the deck. Not enough power for proper efficiency.
