Power surge ruins system?

ive been reading around that typically when a HU blows, so does the amps it was sending signal too.

they wont physically blow the amps, but will mess up some internal circuitry and the amp will turn on fine, but will be actually damaged.

is this true?

most say it is ground related when the amp tries to ground through the RCAS, then Poof.

It may be that those instances are simply more publicized than when a HU dies and doesn't take other equipment with it.

There are many different ways for electronic equipment to fail. The scenario you laid out is one of them, but I wouldn't expect it to be the norm.

yep. i got the harness today, tommorow i need to buy the replacement factory harness, and we will find out for sure.

just wondering, ive read on it. but my amp looks beautiful still

You dont have a boombox, or a home stereo, or any piece of stereo equipment that has RCA outputs? If you do, just use that as your signal source, plug it into your amp, and see if it works. This will tell you conclusively and immediately if your amp is damaged.

Or if you have a 3.5mm to RCA cord for something like your ipod or your phone

Ok, just saw your other thread. Since you have an actual problem with symptoms and stuff, (listed in a different thread, http://www.caraudio.com/forums/general-discussion/526123-my-system-messed-up.html) isolating suspects should be your next step.

The suggestion mentioned above to use a handheld source would be at the top of my troubleshooting list.

Ill do that. I have a home stereo ill plug into it. I hope its the hu.

but i went to Radioshack and bought a y cable, my amp and all speakers worked flawlessy.

the guy their opened my unit, well i be damned, it was the pico fuse with black marks out from both sides!

how am i gunna repair this now? or can someone do it?
