Possible amp or speaker problem

I just recently started having a problem with my two 6x9's in the back of my Sentra. They started making crazy popping/crackling noises so I unplugged them both from the amp and hooked them back up to the head unit and are no longer popping. I was wondering if that meant for sure my amp was going bad or if it could possibly be the speaker and its not popping on the head unit because it isnt getting the same amount of power. The amp is a cerwin vega 400 watt 4 channel and the speakers are kicker. Both speakers and amp are roughly 7 years old. Thanks for any help.

it could be the speaker wire themselves in the speaker terminals of the amp. I was experiencing the same thing not too long ago and found this out troubleshooting. The set screw as your tightening, "cuts" the speaker wire and thus creating popping/crackling noises. Try a connector on the ends see if that solves your issue.
