Ported Confusion

i am not to sure what is meant by boxes that are ported and make 2x the output of a sealed box and the only difference is 3 DBs. I was trying to read and understand how this works and the only thing that i understood was that sound is geometerical and not linear. I just wanted some basics on this. Thanks to all of ya for the info tho i do appreciate it.

After reading more about this why would ne one go sealed besides the fact of better SQ? I mean ported boxes can make 2X the output even sometimes more as i read than a sealed box. If something isnt right with this inform because im sure there is alot i am missing

3db is technically twice the output. To increase output by 3db, it requires a doubling of acoustical power. So, being 3db louder is technically twice the acoustical power.

However, humans have very insensitive hearing...especially in the low subbas frequencies. It typically takes an increase of about 10db to be perceived as "twice as loud".

Going ported will generally give you an increase over sealed of about 3db over the entire bandwidth (all the frequencies being played). However, depending on the box design/tuning frequency and such....ported can have as much as 6-9db more output at a certain frequency over sealed.

Sealed generally has flatter frequency response, better transient response, better low frequency extention (since ported boxes are limited by their tuning frequency), better group delay, and require smaller boxes. That enough reasons for ya?? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

But you see young Jedi, not everything is about sheer volume output //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif Contrary to how most bassheads have their stereo's setup; your bass SHOULD NOT overpower your mids and highs. Everything should be level, playing at the same output level. So, ported boxes having 2x the output should not be your only concern //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

my ported box according to bbp had over 6db over my sealed box. definitely sounded at least twice as loud upon initial install. i don't keep everything at the same settings though because i love my ears lol, i just like it because it allows the amp to run cooler and blah blah, plus these square things need a vent to hit those 20~40hz freqs with some authority

all the benefits of a ported box mixed with some of a sealed...problem is, construction is a ***** //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/imo.gif.3a57bcc70a4835dc53e86ffae1a0b041.gif I feel the sound of ported boxes a 'lil richer too, and you can have them play at the same level as the sealed you just have to set your sub level into a lower level to match it to your fronts.

The dB curve is logarithmic, +3dB = 2x the output
