ported box

Ok, I have a Memphis PR 12" and i have it in a box that is around 1.80 cubes it has a hole in the side of the box (dont know if you would call that ported but....) and when I am playing songs that like bass, with the hole plugged, it sounds ALOT better, and when the hole isnt plugged up it sounds good but up until a certain point..... whats wrong??? Thanks!

It's not a port, Its a hole. Either seal the box or get a piece of PVC and port it with the proper lengeth and diameter. WinISD might help you with that. Just do a search and you should find it.

with just a hole, it's probably tuned super-duper high.^agree, shove the proper length pipe in it, and it will sound better than when you cover the hole. (more that likely)and it would be a port to a certain extent, it would be a port that is 3/4" long.

ported implies that somewhere along the line, some calculations were done to get the desired tuning frequency for the box to adapt the subwoofer to the owner's listening preferences (be it SQ, SPL, SQL).

a hole is basically something someone does cuz they were told ported boxes are better, so they decided to port their box. Seal the hole, or get it to be the right length. Sealing the hole will make the sub quieter. Making the hole the right length will make the sub sound very good, and get loud while doing it .
