Ported box... wow

Wow I had my 2 JL Audio 13.5 W1's in a sealed box and just recently moved it into their newly designed veryyy big ported box and i kid you not my sound almost doubled! These things are seriously hammering now to the point where my ears really do hurt!! Why is it that this much larger ported box can make such a difference!?
