Port Tuning question

I'm a little confused on tuning a port. I've searched around in here and found some conflicting info.

I've been using the carstereo.com calculator for port tuning. When it asks for enclosure volume, is that the gross volume before the port and speaker displacement? I want to make sure the box I'm building is correct before I put a ton of time and money into it and it sounding like crap.

Sorry for the noob question. My search for knowledge wasnt helping. lol //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/veryhappy.gif.fec4fed33b4a1279cf10bdd45a039dae.gif

when using an online calculator you use the internal box volume including all displacement. if you have a 3cu' (net) box and want to figure out how long the port needs to be to tune it to 30hz, you will need to find the port's length and then it's volume. add this to the over all dimensions of your box. your box will then be the original 3cu' + sub displacement + port displacement....possbily making the box, say, 3.8cu' total. build it to this number.
