Port design troubles

Ok, let's see if you can follow what I'm saying. I'm working on the designs to my ported box. It's 3.5^3 @ 28 hz.

I have the port dimensions (square) at 2 x 15.5 x 9.8.

The width of the slot port is 2 inches, which usually means the side of the port must end 2 inches from the back of the box, so there's a 2 inch gap that matches the width of the port.

How important is it that that gap actually matches the width of your port? I really don't feel like redesigning another box.
