Pop and then a smell?

I was driving down my road today and all of the sudden I heard this "pop" come from the general area of my head unit, followed by what smelled like burning plastic. It did not affect the the playing ability of the head unit at all. It's an alpine 9807 unit. I installed it a few months ago. Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks,

Chris

I sure hope you didn't let the smoke out... all electrical components run on smoke. If you let it out, they won't work anymore... you maay always be able to find someone to put it back in, but that's often times more trouble than it's worth.

Your speaker wires probably touched each other...happened to me a month ago...

Or your power wire touched some some of the metal in your chassis...

Might be the speaker wire thing. Because I pushed on the door panel right before the *pop* because I thought something was rattling. I pulled out the unit and it smells like that burnt plastic smell. Could I have damaged anything or do I have nothing to worry about?

Thanks,

Chris

Well I found the problem today when I was rewiring my radio harness. Turns out some of the insulation broke up on the switched 12 volt wire and must have shorted on some metal. What damage could this have caused? The fuse is on the constant 12 volt wire, so would it have blown the fuse? I'm assuming not since everything still worked fine afterwards.

Thanks,

Chris

everythings good as long as everything is still working. it wouldn't work if it had a blown fuse. just use some electrical tape so there is no wire hanging out anymore.

I now question it's future ability to do so...

you said it popped once and then stopped...

that would mean that there was current at one point and now there is none... check if it still puts out currents...

I'm not sure what you mean...It *popped*, sparked, whatever you want to call it, when I was turning. I'm assuming the wires shifted because I was turning and that wire shorted out on something. The head unit still plays and works perfectly fine, if that's what you mean by checking the current.
