My buddy wants some input on a scanner. Want to hard wire it into his beamer for bimmerfest, race from san fran to santa barbra.

Whats a decent scanner, within 200-300$ range

you done need an sxpensive scanner. Problem is you ont just pick up police. Every dpt use a different frequency, city, county, state, they all are different. So wherever you ar driving you will need to program them. You wont just buy one and 'pick up police'. Also if you put it in your car in most states its illegal unless your are a police officer or a fire fighter.

Were in california, Im not too familiar with laws reguarding scanners. But he wants the install to look fairly decent.

just get a uniden, you dont need to spend $300, a $100 scanner is fine

the cousins husband has/had one in his acura tl. it works , but driving in the city it gets annoying since it picks up everything. even the automatic doors at grocery stores... not sure what the brand is though.

my buddy had a nice hand held for 150$ Just make sure it has a wide frequency range and programable buttons. We got it taken away when we got arrested though =/.

I believe its legal to have in california as long as you are not using it to aid "criminal activities".

I think it's illegal to have a scanner in a car in Cali....

Alot of PoPo's out here use Truncated radio systems which will cost twice the price as regular scanner to "maybe" get them....

Just hook up a laptop in your ride and you can listen to the scanners online

To find out for sure try some scanner info sites before you buy.....

Hate to have a real nice install and get locked up for it....

do you want a radar scanner or a airwave scanner. radar scanners are completely legal in california. i have one. the catch is that you are never allowed to mount anything on your front windshield. cops let it go if its a navigation unit cause they don't care. but if you get pulled over for something and they see a radar scanner up there they could right you a ticket for having it on your windshield. the other scanner that picks up radio signals is illegal. getting caught with one of those is a big fine.

edit: radar scanners can be bought at tons of different stores btw. not just online
