Police scanners

I was under the impression he meant Police Scanner like Bearcats and Unidens etc........I dont use radar detectors....

My buddy wants some input on a scanner. Want to hard wire it into his beamer for bimmerfest, race from san fran to santa barbra.
Whats a decent scanner, within 200-300$ range
