Please help me help my son

Check voltage when this occurs, but it sound like the output section is bad or is seeing to low of a load - is this a 2 channel radio and do you have 4 speakers connected? If so that would be a problem.

Could be as simple as a shorted speaker wire also. If you can disconnect all speakers, leaving just one connected - that would be another way to diag the problem

the unit has 4 sets of speaker wires 2 front and 2 back. we are only using the 2 sets of front wires. we installed new speakers and wires yesterday. the sound will get higher than before but it still cuts out. what do you do with the other 2 sets of wires. i had my son tape the ends of all 4 wires. also it is even worse when the truck is on it cuts out a lower volume.

can i hook the power and memory wire to the same constant source of power. i was thinking that would keep the radio running of the battery and not the electrical system?

The radio cuts out. if you put the volume up to far it will cut out until you lower it. and while it is on lower volume it will cut in and out.
By this do you mean you hear no sound ? And the head unit still stays lit up ? Just no sound coming out ? If that's the case, the output section of the head unit is going kaput. Sorry to say, you gonna need another. At least now a days you can get a decent cheap one for less than it cost to repair one most of the time. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

yep just tape them up individually so they don't short. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Just a thought, try using the rear leads instead of the front and see what happens. I bet you get the same crappy result though. But it's worth a shot //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Sounds to me like a voltage problem. Check the alternator.
Nothing else in the car has a problem like lights and ****, so no need to check the ALT could be a sh!tty connection if it is voltae related - use a voltmeter before you do anything drastic.
