sounds to me that your soldering skills could be to blame...

or it is coming loose at the former, if your solder joint is good....

That's the thing it looks like a completely normal soldered connection. It's not coming disconnected or anything. Yet it will cut in and out if you move the tinsel around before the connection.

The other side started cutting out anyways. Could I be clipping the hell out of these causing them to fail and not even realize it? I thought I would be able to hear the distortion. Or am I just giving them too much power? Seemed pretty modest amount.

ive had problems with the positve leads of the high end pioneer's grounding out the the basket/ door in the car..

so that could be the case allso.

Would a really hot JL 300/4 component amp indicate the speaker wire grounding out somewhere?

ehhh that's hard to say. usually in the case of a speaker lead grounding out usually throw's amps into protect...

what impedence are you running the speakers at?

4 ohms on each of 4 channels

the tweeters on the 2 other channels seems fine, the amp never went into protect when I've had it. I'm 99.99999999% sure it's the mids. I ordered new ones today so we'll see lol.
