Pioneer theater in a box question on sub bottoming out

I have a Pioneer theater in a box, which I got for $200 from Wal-mart. It is good enough for me for now (it is in a bedroom), my only complaint is that loud bass from explosions or music will bottom out the small 6.5" sub. The back of the enclosure indicates it is 6 ohms. Is this a problem with the driver or the amplification? All the bass, treble, EQ, etc settings are off, BTW.

Could I buy a cheap 6.5" driver from the web and simply switch out the drivers, and have better performance? How about polyfill?

Thanks!

the 6.5" driver cant handle the subsonic frequencies in movies

you might be able to swap the driver with a higher xmax tang band from parts express, but it probably wont help much since the amp will probably become the limiting factor then

exactly...

You are turning it up to high and bottoming it out, so you need something with more output. If you dont want to spend any money well you are gonna have to deal with it. but If you want to lay down about $300 you will get a nice sub out of it.

a 10" for about 159 shipped or 169 for a 12" shipped

http://www.tcsounds.com/tc1000.htm

plus say this plate amp for about $129 shipped

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=300-804

and about another $40 for a box if you build it yourself

but it sounds like you just want a simply fix and that wont really happen cause like described above you can switch out the sub but then your output will be limited by the amp and then the box the sub is in from the htib, is probably a big pos.

Hmm, well considering the whole system only cost $200, I don't think a $300 sub setup would be appropriate lol. You are right in that I am looking for a cheap fix, I only use it once a month or so. The output on it would be fine if only it didn't bottom out. One day I will get a nice home theater setup, but for now I just need a band aid on the cheapo sub.

So basically you guys are saying with a better 6.5", at low volume it will not be powered enough because a better driver requires more power overall.

Subsonic frequencies are in movies? As in lower than 20hz? Is there a cheap subsonic filter I could add to perhaps fix the problem?

its not really the case of not having enough power for hte driver but enough output to please you, Thats why you turn it up until it bottoms out.

And yes lots of movies have 20 hertz and lower..

the filter can be found on parts express for about $30 but you said it also bottoms out on music right? so its plainly that you are just cranking it past the limits of the sub. getting a different sub MIGHT help. but it could also not help and just be wasted $

Well, maybe I mis-worded "music." I was mostly referring to the opening scene of Star wars Ep III, right after the opening text, there are a few very deep tribal drum hits before the fighters enter the scene. So not really music per-se.

I don't have very high taste in home theater (yet!). I just spent a lot on the car's system so a new home setup will have to wait!

So the amp is basically clipping at that high of an output? If thats the case a new driver would be pointless. I will see if I see a deal though, maybe I will save up for a cheap powered sub.
