It DOES play mp3's.

It does not have an internal amplifier or tuner. (Not meaning it doesn't work, or it's broke... it did not come with one.).

Anyone with a Pioneer HU would be SET.

Any pioneer HU with IP-BUS connection can control this DVD unit itself as well...

It is essentially a DVD/CD/MP3 transport. It is also satellite radio capable.
