PICS!! Alt guys, any idea how you would test a pigtail to be OK?

I made a thread yesterday and figured out that my brand new HO alt wasnt either turning on or charging the batteries, so I called the person I got it from and they said to have the pigtail checked first.

Ofcourse my local auto parts store isnt open til tomorrow (and I dont even know if they can test a pigtail I live in such a small town)

So I pulled the pigtail off just now. And heres some pics. The metal prong connectors look good n pretty clean, there all there. Im just curious if there is an easy check or something that I can do with my DMM

The alternator is for a 4.6 SOHC mustang 96-98

Appreciate any help

i have a ho alt from a 94 stang in my subaru //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

i dont see how the pigtail could be bad, as long as all the pins are there and not broken.

You do know that one of the wires nees to loop back to the POS off the alt.

and one of them needs a hot ignition wire with a resistor inline (or light)

i think, i know i had to do it with mine...

Continuity check the end of the wire to the pin on the inside of the plug? That's about all you can do...
How exactly do you check continuity, never never how to do that. Would be a good thing to know for future reference though!! This is what my dmm looks like, dont know which does continuity or how exactly to do it

Well the plastic casing seems quite big to be just a housing for wires, I figured there may be something in there that could go bad?

I did connect the yellow wire back to the positive post of the alt, and the green to a power source when the car is running.

does the one hooked up to the hot wire have a resistor inline? or a light (which is a resistor) ?

that is why cars have the dummy light for your charging system..it isnt there just to show you when its not charging, its there to act like a resistor and a by product is if your charging system stops working the light comes on...

well, if it is, it should be the same as mine.

I used a 500 ohm resistor (IIRC) inline with my hot wire, works great...if it is a 3g, i guess i can go outside in the freezing cold and check and make sure i used a 500ohm resistor for you...

Like on the green wire that is supposed to turn the alt on by getting 12+ volt when the car is on, there is a resistor?? What the heck would you need that for? The guy I bought it off sure didnt mention that and he told me how to wire it

shouldn't need a resistor, I don't have one... and I think his is actualy a 4G becuase I have a 3G and it is similar but def. not the same...

your pigtail is fine, get the alt. checked and stop making a new post every time you have a question on this fukkin alt. you've got like 3-4 threads now and I have answered all your questions in your previous thread and you just continue asking the same questions..... your alt. is junk, it sucks but you can't just ask a bunch of different questions and hope the problem will fix itself...
