Phone Hardwire help

Hey guys, looking for a little help hard wiring a power cord for my android that I use for music in the car. I would like to have the phone mounted on the windshield in the top left corner, but having a cord dangling just isnt gonna cut it.

The power cord is 1A and is a micro usb going into the phone. I recently hardwired my valentine 1 radar detector, so I am fairly confident in my skills as far as running the wires and soldering, but my concern is with what is in the actual cigarette lighter plug. Is there anything in the plug that needs to be kept, or is it simply just the socket in the plug? Ive heard of people frying gps units trying to do this, so Id love to hear some advice from people that know their way around this type of project so I dont end up with a htc paper weight

Thanks!

I've done several of these including my own escort 9500ix at times there is nothing more than a fuse inside others there is a circuit board inside. Open the case carefully in the event of a circuit board you can do the simple mod and close it back up, sometimes that can only be achieved by wrapping the entire unit it in electrical tape.

Once open find the power and ground wires typically red and black, cut off the end farthest from the board (unless you feel like soldering your new wire direct to the board then do so) now extend those wires ensuring to use a fuse holder on the power wire. (I like these over the twist on as they are less susceptible to failure due to vibrations.

Now that you have extended the wire, run your wires out of the sides or the hole in the center just depends on what's going to allow you to close the case properly. If it was screw on, screw it back up and secure with two or three passes of electrical tape and cover any openings to eliminate the unlikely probability of having something get inside and cause a short on the board.

Leaving some slack Secure the wires coming out with tape or zip ties to the unit this should absorb any stress to your new connections.

From here you are ready to wire up to your vehicle with peace of mind from frying your device.

GL and post pics.
