Phoenix Gold RSd 12" is overrated??

Ok guys, recently I put up a thread stating what would hit harder and sound better, 2 MTX Roadthunders vs. 1 Phoenix Gold RSD 12". Everyone pretty much said the RSD would CRUSH the two MTX's.

Well, my RSD came in today and sadly, that was not the case. My singe sub box being built for me was not finished yet, so what I did was take out one of the MTX's from it's current sealed box, unplugged the other one and I put in the Phoenix Gold. All the holes lined up so it was an easy swap out.

I was so excited to hear some music but I was really underwhelmed. There was BARELY a noticeble difference in both SPL or SQ. The one RSD was only a tad better than the two generic MTX's but from what everyone said, I expected alot more out of it. I know it is more a SQ sub but I just was thinking it would be WAY better, but it just wasn't. Definately not worth the extra 100 bucks for the sub and 20 bucks for the box that it is costing me

I am just hoping that in the single box which I am having built sealed to about 1.8 cu ft that it will hit better. Maybe the current box is too big but I hear this sub needs a big box so I figured it wouldn't be a problem. The box I have it in now is only about 2.3 cu ft right now.

And if anyone is interested I had it connected at 4 ohms at 480 RMS so it shouldn't be a power issue. The two MTX's i had were powered off the same amp at 480 for the two of them.

We'll see what happens with the new box....//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

the rsd is a good sub...for the price. it probably will not be louder then the 2 mtx just due to surface area and the fact it is probably not as efficient. but it needs to be put in a box optimized for the way it was made.

my brother has 1 in a 1.2 cu ft filled with 1.5 lbs of polyfill in his lex running off an pg x400.1. does a good job of putting nice, tight, and low bass if the setting is right. it isn't incredibly loud but it does its thang for (1) 12".

Well it is already a little louder than the the 2 mtx's but I was just maybe expecting too much maybe?? Hopefully it will get even louder when i get the smaller box that is reccomended. I actually found out the box its in now is about 2.5 cu ft so maybe that is just too oversized and really limiting it. we'll see. Supposed to get my other box tonight

Is the enclosure a dual chamber or a single common chamber?

If it was a common chamber, then part of the reason for the poor performance would be the fact that you had placed the sub in a very poor passive radiator enclosure.

Yeah, they are power hungry man. I know a guy throwing like 1100 watts, low gains obv. in a small sealed enclosure and it does great. Don't be araid to throw some power on the bit*hes.

Yes, they can take some power, but 1100w..... low gains..... ????

If the gain is set to deliver 1100w rms, then it's 1100w rms. If it's an amp that can produce 1100w rms max at a given impedance, and the gain is set considerably lower than that, then it's not 1100w.

SQRT(Watts * Ohms) = OUTPUT VOLTAGE

SQRT(1100 * 2) = 46.9V

You sure his amp is providing 46.9v on the output?

In all honestly, what did you expect putting it in a prefab enclosure:confused: Before you make a thread talking down on a sub, make a box that its actually made to go in..
