For what you said....I would look into a 94-98 Saab 9000 Aero,it comes stock with 225hp & with some supporting upgrades doing ECU upgrades should be no problem.

SAAB is a thought, though I'd have to say they are ugly and less than inspiring to drive (used to work at SAAB dealership).

RWD is a no go people, so there is no point in considering it.... and the only downside to the ecplipses is the utter molestation most of them have been through and their small size.

I don't really need utility space just a comfortable driver seat...

Also the car market in the NE is cheaper than elsewhere. http://nh.craigslist.org is proof. I can get 6-7k cars elsewhere for 4-5k here... at least compared to oregon

neon SRT-4 is also a thought but I imagine they often suffer the fate of the talon/eclipse cars and get into the hands of children...

it also helps that the market out here is cheaper and we have a family friend that runs a car dealership (I can search at auction). So if you are thinking dealer price cut 3-4k of what you THINK it's worth...

x2...exactly what I was thinking. I got mine into high 13's with $400 into mods, and that is alot faster than a stock eclipse/talon. The cars can take 400hp easy too. I cans stick with alot of cars out of the price range and I can do one hell of a burnout for a fwd car. I'm selling my 02 gtp, but it's alittle out of yur price range.

my only worry on the exlipse/talon/laser end is the amount of those cars that have been in the hands of real hacks or have been riced is pretty high...
The VR-4 is really down my ally but the interior is so-so and like I said they are hard to find.....

so you dont want a DSM because you're worried about the hacks that have been racing it... but a VR-4 sounds fantastic.

they are both DSM....... but the VR-4 is more likely to be adult owned based on it being a 4dr sedan... Any DSM I bought would be carefully looked over to make sure hacks haven't had their hands on it... plus I'd prefer a sedan to a coupe and the Galant doesn't scream "pull me over, I'm 16 and I'm experimenting with mixing testosterone and alcohol". The old talon/eclipse (90-94/95?) fits the bill quite well but so many have been hacked up it'd be hard to find a good one.

Look for an older GTI. Other than that, you're being WAY too picky for only spending 5 grand. I say get something shitty/drivable and take care of what you said REALLY matters at this point in time and then save up another time for a nice performance car instead of a piece of garbage thats probably beaten up and not really THAT great to begin with.
