partial trunk deadening

well i decided today to start the process. took me about an hour to do the bottom of the rear deck (about 6 sq ft.). turns out that it made my bass stay in the trunk rather than enter through the rear deck, so i'm hearing less of it in my car, seems like i lost a lot of bass. rattling seemed to get worse also from the outside. any input? i still have to do the side/floor, and maybe second layer the lid. will this make it any better?

That piece of carpet you removed to get to the bare metal in your trunk lid helps retain some of the sound waves? I noticed the samething when I did mines, but it wasn't a HUGE loss...

well i did the lid a while back and its been fine, but its the damplifier i just installed on the trunk side of the rear deck thats causing the bass loss. i dont know what happened.

alright thanks i will try that today. so i should avoid doing the top of the rear deck also right?

no, that was a big trouble spot for rattles in my car, just make sure you apply deadener to the metal and leave all holes open. if you are lucky, the holes for your rear speakers are big and you can just leave them open, maybe a cutthrough if possible in seats, like "ski holes" or W/e they called

okay i will probably cut all the holes open soon. i dont even have rear speakers, the passat's rear speakers are components on each of the backseat doors, haha. but yeah, i will probably cut the holes from the bottom and do the top today. see how it works.

you guys were right, cut the holes and everything is fine now. but ran into another problem. i unscrewed the carpet off my trunk lid to see the dynamat that was 'professionally installed' a month ago. it looked like shit, indents havent even been pressed down so much of the dynamat isnt stuck to the metal, just looked like they laid it on in 10 minutes and gave the car to me. is there any way of removing this? or should i just cut air holes and try to press the mat down and layer it a second time?

if it's really bad then taking it off won't be that hard. i'd try to do it when it's as cold as possible and just take your time. if you happen to not get some of the residue off the new deadener will stick to it n/p. might be able to get a heat gun(like what people use for tinting, not blow dryer) and just finish applying what's there, don't remove any just heat and roll. i'd probably do the that first.
