painting my first box...anything i need to remember?

this is gonna be my first attempt at painting the whole box...and i want it to look good and last. i made a trip to wally world and bought some krylon primer, krylon interior/exterior gloss black, and a good bit of 320 grit between coat sandpaper. what other prep work should i do and what are some things i should remember?

Well not to thread jack, but maybe you can benefit from this as well..

Would painting with a paint brush/roller be easier/better than spray?

Using spray paint on a fairly large box can take a few cans...

Same question for clear....spray or brush on?

i would still sugest the spray or youll be sanding your *** off. just to make it look good.

I'm starting the paint job, so far I've rounded all the edges of the box and sanded it

using 80 grit and slopped some wood filer on all the cut edges. After the wood filler

dries I'll smooth it down with 230 grit and begin the primer stage by brushing it on.

• Miniwax Sanding Sealer Primer(brush on)
  
• 4 cans of Gloss Black Lacquer for wood
  
• 1 can automotive clear(not used)
  
• Elmers wood filler
  

Rounded Edges...



1st Primer Coat, mdf hella sucked it right up...

3rd coat of primer and it's not soaking in anymore, I think its gonna be an excellent

surface to apply my Gloss Black Wood Lacquer. I'm gonna do another coat of

primer tonight and then tomorrow after work I will sand the entire box with 400grit...

4th coat of gloss black lacquer

and it's getting to be a really solid gloss black, but I have a few wavy lines that I'm

not sure how to take care of and I really need some help or recomendations on

what to do...

I figured out the best way to get rid of the lines and that is to wetsand the box.

I got the supplies and will start wet sanding the box tommorow if the box is cured

enough....

I only did a lil wetsanding, just enough to get rid of the lines in the prevous pics. I think I

may wetsand the top some more to getrid of the slightly noticable orange peel, but overall I'm pretty stoked

about teh end result.

np, bro. So do you think your going to do it my way? If you are make sure you let the Sealer Primer set for 3 days before you start sanding. I noticed it ball up when I was sanding it after the first day because it wasn't cured long enough.

I took some video yesterday, but havn't got around to uploading it to my PC, the video will give you a great view of the entire box from inside the vehicle looking back at it with the seats down and from the rear hatch of the vehicle from a few different angles.

I forgot to take pics of the box outside of the vehicle. I bolted it to the frame of my truck so it's not going anywhere now.

yep CB is right, those are great to use between coats to wipe the dust off. I used a tack cloth when I smoked my tailights and they were pretty much dust speck free.

If you dont like using tack cloth, lint free soft wipes and denatured alcohol.

If you arent looking for an imperfect finish use masking tape and roll it over like that lint remover tape stuff. It gives a different flat type texture to it.
