over heating / ac getting hot

when the car is running idle the air gets warm then hot.

when the car is driving down the road the ac sometime blow hot.

When the car is idle and I try messing with the ac climate control in the car the motor starts to over heat. I checked under the hood and the fan sometimes is not on when it should be.

The ac climate control in the car has a messed up selector switch ( the one that controls the circulation pattern).

The engine got up to 245+ at idle. but after the car was moving it dropped of course. Could this be fan related.?

Now I think that the switch is causeing the fan not to turn on and also switching from cool to hot.. I am open for your ideas. I will be back online later. thanks for your thoughts.

2003 chevy cavalier. 2.2 coupe.

I think it is ahead of radiator. They only put one fan on this car and it is suppossed to do it all.

I am starting to lean more towards the switch or something in that ballpark.

Well the fan should be an auto fan. maybe there is a problem in relay. I would check your thermostat. What you do is boil a pot of water, drop it in and watch it. If it opens its still good.

Could easily be a fan switch/relay, which would give similar symptoms to a bad thermostat. Obviously grimreper has never had the experience of such an occurrence to draw knowledge from. It happens.

whenever your a/c is on, there should allways be one of the cooling fans working. sometimes when you driving a constant speed for a distance the fan MAY turn off with the a/c on.

if you dont have a fan going with the a/c on, check the relays for the fans.

Wait, let me get this straight... you ask me if I'm stupid, then go on to suggest the exact problems I first pointed out? lol

Nice....

So what exactly is wrong with that? Please educate us all... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

the car will possibly overheat worse with no thermostat. the fluid won't stay in the radiator long enough to cool off because the thermostat never closes. not to mention the check engine light might stay on. that's what happenned with my s10.

Interesting... so when the water gets hot, the thermostat closes so that it keeps it in the radiator to cool off, is that how it works?
