Output; sealed vs infinite baffle

I'm looking for answers from people who have tried IB setups with larger woofers like 12's, 15's, 18's..... Wondering how much output you lose out on by going IB vs sealed..
I have a '12 RE XXX15D2 driven by an AP3K in the trunk of an '01 BMW 328ci
Not sure how i keep clicking your threads... That's going to be one heck of a sub to have to hold up and brace in an IB scenario. Also, IB and sealed are basically the same thing. IB actually has more output down low/watt assuming your baffle is sealed up well and that's pretty much all there is to it. The better you seal it up, the closer the output will be to a VERY large sealed box. The worse the seal, the more output you'll lose to cancellation. At some point though, extra sealing doesn't make much of a difference. Make sure the baffle holding the driver is rock solid, for a driver like that you may want to hold it at the mounting point, and further down on the motor as well. Beyond that try and fill up very hole so the back of the cone and front of the cone are sharing no airspace. Would this be IB pointing up and down, or firing straight in? Again, this isn't my preferred solution, but still have to ask.

This driver is already going to have more low end output in a car than your likely to be able to make blend with itself, let alone small mid basses and the bracing required to keep this thing still is going to be stupid. Your better off going with a 3-5 cubic foot box sealed than trying to make an IB setup out of this thing. Use as big a box as you can comfortably fit. If it was going in a house IB would be a good solution, as would a large ported enclosure. Since your in a car however, a medium/large sized sealed enclosure really becomes the best option.

What kind of music do you listen to, what artists?

Mostly pop type music, some rap and when I get this sub installed it will be a lot of dubstep (15-25hz). I was thinking about maybe doing some 8" kick pannels to make up for the anticipate lack of 50+ hz output...

And firing straight in, probably directly into the 40 side of my 60/40 rear seat with the 40 side down.

8's in the kicks would probably be a good idea. Anyway my vote goes to sealed. that'll be ALOT easier to make and if you for some reason don't feel you have enough output below 35hz, you can always try an IB setup.

I could probably do 5 cubes max.. Would that be enough?

I won't say it won't work, but there are so many other subs out there that have been proven to work in IB that won't be so difficult to support. People have even used $30 blue Pyle 15s and really enjoyed the results. A more mainstream option is the JBL GTO 15s.

I'm not a huge fan of dubstep, but do have a few songs I demo. What dubstep are you playing that's 15-25Hz? I have never heard any dropping that low.

I did a 4 15 IB set up in the HT, output was down about 6db's vs 2 15's ported I had before that. Bass was MUCH cleaner but the punch/authority just wasn't there like ported.

Personally I would go ported, possibly tuned a little higher then normal vs sealed or IB for your choice of music...

Not sure if your looking soley for things that drop that low, but here are a few that should be good in your vehicle. Honestly not much goes that low in dubstep, like in the other thread, it mostly just sounds like it since 150db's at 30hz without ANY rattling panels sounds ungodly low and loud. Dubstep concerts can be intense. Like I said, Bassnectar uses stacks that 9 on each side can do a mid 150 from 30-100, except instead of 9 per side he uses between 30-75, depends on the venue. If your within 30 feet of the stacks it's alot like an SPL rig, but the sound is way different since it's an open air environment. There is no "shaking" of your body, it just gets hard to breathe, your clothes and hair begin to move and it all sounds ungodly low.

1. va va voom by bass nectar (constant high bass, should be hard to breathe)

2.Timestretch (west coast remix) bass nectar, mostly mid 30's, but has alot of lower stuff mixed in, including a nice 25hz tone in the opening, picks my seat up a bit, I like this one)

3.Whiteout by Jarvis, alot of 30hz tones in this.

4. How wanted low, try "ask yourself" by plastikman. Peaks in the 30's and 40's drops off near the 20s and picks back up, heavy lowend all the way down to 5hz.. Hehe, kind of a bs track, but it's the only thing I know of that doesn't peak out in the 20's.

Should be fine. 5 cubes is normally enough to do at least 1 ported 12 maybe a ported 15 depending on how you tune it. If that's not enough space for a single 12, then you have a major problem.

yeah, either way it should be enough space. Sealed boxes are very forgiving. Just be aware as I said earlier, your going to have to cross this thing over no higher than 60hz, you basically only get octave of response on normal music, 30-60. It won't go over 60, but it should go below 30 nicely still.
